Impacted wisdom teeth swelling can cause great fear and anxiety for many people. This is usually because they do not know what to expect when they go to the dentist to diagnose and treat their condition. Much of the process will include diagnosis of the swelling, and deciding which procedure would be best to treat the patient.

When the patient first goes into the dentist office, they will most likely get a series of x-rays to diagnose their swelling. The most common type of x-ray for wisdom teeth is the panoramic film. This gives the dentist a good picture of the entire jaw and all four wisdom teeth.

Next, the dentist will perform a visual exam of the affected area. There are couple of reasons for infections. The most common is infection. Another possibility is a cyst. Sometimes a cyst will form around an impacted wisdom tooth if it has not been removed. This is typically only found in older patients.

In either case, the dentist will likely recommend extracting the affected tooth. If the dentist feels like he or she can do perform the extraction in their office, they will simply reappoint the patient for the extraction of the tooth. If infection is causing the swelling, the patient is usually prescribed a round of antibiotics to control the infection because infection can sometimes cause ineffectiveness of the anesthetic. Infection will also result in slow healing time.

If the dentist feels the extraction may be too difficult for them, the patient may be referred to a specialist called an oral surgeon. An oral surgeon has facilities and equipment that a regular dentist does not usually have in their office. This may include the ability to sedate a patient intravenously, or different methods of wisdom teeth removal. Oral surgeon referrals are common when it comes to impacted wisdom teeth. This is because the tooth has not fully erupted. Sometimes the development of the tooth is hindered due to the anatomy of the patient’s jaw, or the shape and anatomy of the tooth itself.

Going to the oral surgeon is not much of a big procedure, as many people make it out to be. It can usually be a quicker alternative to the regular dentist office extraction because of the additional specialized skill of the surgeon and the access to surgical tools and sedation.

When going to the oral surgeon, a patient will likely have a consultation visit. This will allow the surgeon to view the patient’s x-ray images and discuss the procedure with the patient, so they know what they can expect. They can also communicate their preferences when it comes to sedation and anxiety control.

After the procedure, the patient is instructed on how to care for their extraction site for minimal healing time. They may also be prescribed antibiotics if the doctor feels they may become reinfected.

It is important not to delay seeking dental care when it comes to oral infection. Infection can reduce bone level and have a major impact on a patient’s overall health.

Millions of people the world over get wisdom teeth, most often between the ages of 17 to 24. Some people only get one or two but you can have up to four wisdom teeth. If the teeth do not fit well in your mouth then they become impacted and cause swelling, pain and even infection. Impacted wisdom teeth surgery is the only way to permanently cure this; while some people do take antibiotics and painkillers, these do not cure the problem but only reduce the symptoms.

If you need surgery done on your teeth, your dentist will either do it himself or refer you to a dental surgeon, depending on the particulars of your case. Either way, you will be asked to stop smoking as this slows the healing after the surgery and makes it more likely for the gums to become infected.

In most cases you only need to have local anesthesia applied to the gums and then the dentist will extract the wisdom tooth or teeth. This will leave your jaw without feeling for a few hours but you will be awake during the entire procedure, which takes just a few minutes. If you need more complicated surgery due to infection or severe impaction, then you will be given a general anesthesia. This is a lot more involved as you will have to fast for up to six hours before the procedure, in some cases not even drinking water. The nurse will also take your blood pressure and heart rate and you will be asked to sign a consent form stating that you understand what the surgery entails and giving permission for it to take place.

Irregardless of where the wisdom teeth surgery takes place, after the operation the gums will be stitched up and you will need to give yourself some time to recover before going home. If you have only had a local anesthesia you can drive home as soon as you feel ready but with general anesthesia you will need to ask a friend to drive you home or call a taxi, although the first option is more advisable. You will also need to avoid drinking alcohol, driving or doing important legal work for around 48 hours after the operation. The anesthetic takes time to fully wear off and you will feel a bit woozy and not be able to think clearly.

You will also be given antiseptic mouthwash and antibiotics by the nurse attending your surgery. Be sure to use these as often as you are told to so that you do not risk the gum area becoming infected. Using painkillers of some kind is also important as once the anesthetic wears off the area is quite painful. It is not just the tooth or teeth that is removed with wisdom teeth surgery but also a part of the jawbone is taken out by the dentist so that he or she can pull out the entire wisdom tooth. Watch what you eat as well and do not try to eat hard to chew foods before you feel ready.

When referred to an oral surgeon for their impacted wisdom teeth removal, many patients wonder what they can expect. For many of these patients, it could be their first time getting a tooth extracted or having oral surgery at all, so it is important for their dentist to explain the procedure to them thoroughly to prevent any anxiety about the procedure.

Before almost any procedure is done, a dentist will typically take a series of x-rays to diagnose and treat dental problems including extractions. This is a way to tell the doctor what the difficulty level of the procedure. When it comes to wisdom teeth extractions, there are a few things the dentist will look for. One is the anatomy of the tooth. Wisdom teeth have more than one root, so the angle of the root and the shape of the roots are a big factor. If the roots are very curved or hooked, it could spell a difficult extraction. If the roots are small and straight, this would be a very simple and quick extraction.

Another factor would be the shape of the patient’s jaw and the placement of the teeth in the jaw. Sometimes there is not enough room for the tooth to fully erupt, or the tooth may come in at an improper angle. Sometimes the teeth come in completely sideways. These are known as impacted wisdom teeth because they have not been allowed to fully erupt due to anatomical reasons.

Extracting impacted wisdom teeth is usually a more involved process and could require more equipment than the regular dentist may have on hand. For these reasons, many dentists will refer patients needing these procedures to an oral surgeon.

Many patients have a certain anxiety towards going to a surgeon, but it is usually necessary for proper removal and healing of the extraction. The procedure is typically quite simple for most cases.

First, depending upon the patient’s preference, the surgeon may administer some sedation. This can come in the form on medication before the procedure, inhaled nitrous oxide, or intravenous medication. These are not to control pain, however. They are only to control the amount of anxiety the patient will experience.

The patient will then get local anesthetic. This is to numb the area of the extraction so the patient cannot feel the procedure. It is typically administered by injection. Most dentists and surgeons use a topical anesthetic to numb the skin around the injection site. This will lessen the sting of the injection.

After the patient is numb, the surgeon will use a variety of instruments to remove the teeth. Removing impacted teeth usually requires gaining access, so cutting into the gum tissue is necessary. Sometimes they need to section the teeth for easier removal. An experience surgeon will have the procedure done in hardly any time at all.

When it is all done, the patient will heal on their own. The amount of healing time depends on the difficulty of the extraction. The surgeon and their staff will give the patient a specific set of instructions to aid in their healing. Sometimes the patient will need to return to the office for post operative checks or to remove sutures.

Removing wisdom teeth is not usually difficult for the right practitioner, but it can be a frightening procedure for many patients. The easiest way to prevent anxiety is through patient education.

Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge. They are commonly known as the third and fourth molars in your mouth. They are called wisdom teeth because they do not emerge until you are in your later teens or early twenties. Impacted wisdom teeth are these molars that do not have enough room to grow normally. They can easily become infected and cause many other dental issues. This is why many dentists will remove an impacted tooth whether it is infected or not.

Impacted wisdom teeth symptoms usually do not appear unless an infection occurs. When they become infected several symptoms will appear such as pain, red, swollen, or bleeding gums, jaw swelling, bad breath, headaches, or a bad taste in your mouth. If any of these symptoms appear you should go see a dentist right away as these are the key signs of infection. In many cases everyone will have impacted wisdom teeth because there is simply not enough room for them to grow in properly. There are different types of impacting such as partial or full. Partial is when a tooth erupts from the gum some. When this happens they usually grow at an angle towards the back of the mouth or towards other teeth. They can also remain in the gum and never erupt which is a full impact. They can also grow along the jaw bone or down into the jaw bone.

Ignoring this problem can cause several complications like damage to other teeth, cysts, decay, and gum disease. If the third molar pushes against the second molar it can cause pressure that will crowd all the other teeth together resulting in a need for braces, or it can make the second molar vulnerable to infection. Cysts can form from an infection in the sac that a tooth grows in, and since they are harder to clean it can cause decay and gum disease. Treatment for this issue is usually the removal of the teeth. This procedure is performed on outpatient conditions so you will go home the same day. There are two different types of sedation available. They can give you local anesthesia which will just numb the area during removal. They can also give you sedation which will make you go completely to sleep and you will not be aware the procedure is going on. A dentist or oral surgeon will make a small cut in the gum and remove any bone blocking the tooth as well as the tooth. They will then stitch up the wound and pack the empty socket with gauze. After that they send you home with instructions on how to care for the wound. There are rarely any complications with this type of surgery.

This type of procedure is common and dentists usually do every single day. Nearly all adults will have to have their wisdom teeth removed in their lifetime. Regular dental checkups can keep your mouth healthy as well as monitor your wisdom teeth’s growth progress. Oral surgery is usually not a comforting thought, but keeping up on dental health will make removing your wisdom teeth an easy procedure.
